Evidence-Based Treatment for OCD

  • Exposure and Response/Ritual Prevention (ERP or ExRP) is the gold-standard, first-line evidence-based treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). ERP is more than facing your fears, it is a technical treatment that requires a lot of nuance (as it is often counterintuitive). Exposures are based on what is being avoided and what triggers a compulsion or ritual. Clients are encouraged to approach triggers systematically without doing compulsions or rituals. The more clients practice exposures, the more they learn to tolerate anxious thoughts without engaging in the thoughts by doing compulsions or rituals. Exposures are specific, planned, graduated, prolonged, repetitive, and focused (without distraction or rituals). If you have been diagnosed with OCD or are wanting to explore an OCD diagnosis, we will complete the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Symptom (Y-BOCS) Checklist and the Y-BOCS Scale to guide our exposure work together.
